Some found work helping fishmongers at fish stalls and gave themselves the title of fishing cats. One cat was so devoted to getting a government job that it went to a government service window and became a civil servant cat. But Huadou was different. In a quiet third-tier city, cats of every size and color darted through the grass and behind restaurants, hurrying on their paws toward an open space. On her first day at work, she discovered that all her colleagues were cats. Her job was to take complaints and inquiries from cats of all sizes, then help coordinate a response. "Complaint: A human poured water into a cat's home. That's so mean!" After receiving the complaint, staff immediately went to investigate. They found that the location was actually an abandoned drainage pipe. With so much rain recently, community workers had cleared it out and put it back into service. A family of cow-patterned cats has now been rehoused. "Inquiry: My human grew up and got kicked out of the house. Can a cat adopt her?" After a site visit, staff found that the person in question hadn't been kicked out. She had moved to another city to rent a place after starting work. By the time staff arrived to investigate, the cat who had called had already traveled two hundred li to the human's home. After staff helped work things out, the human living independently was temporarily assigned to the caller cat's care. "Complaint: Mom always favors my big sister. She lets her eat at the table and gives her yummy food in the little room, but she won't feed the cat. The cat is sad." Our investigation confirmed that the caller cat's big sister and mother are humans. To keep the cat from eating things it shouldn't, they eat separately in a little room where the cat can't go. The staff and cat staff have explained this to the caller, Little Orange, several times, but the kitten refuses to accept it and insists on wanting a taste.
