When he was eighteen, Sean passed a book-filled shop window in the Scottish town of Wigtown and told his friend, "This shop will be out of business by the end of the year." Thirteen years later, nothing had changed. Curious, he quit his job at a television station and bought the secondhand bookshop, which was simply called "The Bookshop." As the seasons turned, his prejudices about books gradually wore away. Sean said it felt like the end of a chaotic era. But the story continued: the black cat Captain guarded the premises, the Italian girl Emanuela gradually became part of the town, and more bookshops sprang up nearby. In Wigtown, ideas about reading books that were once dismissed found acceptance. The atmosphere and personal connections of physical bookshops remain their own special refuge, and perhaps a modest revival is still to come.
