The Moon Hidden in the Clouds, Embroidered

Aboard a painted pleasure boat on the Gusu Canal, Su Yue's performance of “Gathering Lotus” on the zither enchants the waters. Shen Yun, dressed in a dark blue robe, stops to listen. Amid the fragrance of Biluochun tea, a handkerchief bears the words “Clouds Conceal the Moon's Embroidery.” But political turmoil arises: “I return your pearl, tears falling in pairs.” An Eastern pearl sinks beneath the waves, while a strand of black hair carries an unspoken message. Fortunately, Chen Jingran helps them fake their deaths. The bells of Hanshan Temple ring out their reunion: he abandons his career in government, and she escapes her gilded cage. Beside Taihu Lake's lotus flowers, they brew tea together. In the end, canal lanterns illuminate the embroidery shop, the handkerchief enters the archives, and their poem is passed down through the ages: “Fame, fortune, and rank are all fleeting guests; only true love can withstand the years.”
