Luxury Goods in Swan Lake

In a Paris fashion workshop, apprentice Charlotte spent every day sewing velvet gowns for export around the world. The daughters of Egyptian governors, the wives of Ottoman sultans, and the mistresses of Brazilian coffee plantations all wore dresses made by her hands. The workshop owner would say, "We don't wage war. We conquer with silk." Years later, Charlotte realized that these gowns had crossed the oceans alongside French goods, capital, and champagne, reshaping the tastes of local aristocrats wherever they went until they resembled the Parisian ideal. At last, she understood: she hadn't been sewing clothes, but weaving a velvet empire from elegance, one with no borders and a presence everywhere.
