The Cloud Banquet of Wisdom and Compassion

In the caves of Qingliang Mountain, Manjushri reads weathered sutras; in the Chaoyin Cave at Putuo, Guanyin listens to the world's suffering. Manjushri uses wisdom to contemplate the truth and uncover the ignorance that blinds sentient beings, while Guanyin, through the perfect realization of the ear faculty, receives the countless cries of sorrow from the world.

The pure practices cultivated over immeasurable eons were never the solitary meditation of two sacred sites. As the assembly at Vulture Peak begins, the World-Honored One, Shakyamuni, silently offers his teachings. Samantabhadra undertakes great deeds, Ksitigarbha makes profound vows, and Maitreya smiles with patient forbearance. Shariputra debates the Dharma, Maudgalyayana displays his supernatural powers, Kashyapa rigorously upholds the precepts, and Ananda recites the scriptures. Sudhana travels far in search of the Way, while the Dragon Girl makes her resolve in the Dragon Palace. Weituo, Qielan, and other Dharma protectors guard the sacred grounds, as elders in ancient temples keep to the everyday practices of sweeping floors and brewing tea.

Manjushri and Guanyin journey together into the world to examine its troubles. Amid the tangled loves and hatreds of sentient beings, they see the limits of their respective paths; when they return to retreat and turn their gaze inward, they perceive the attachments in their own hearts. Buddhas and bodhisattvas, arhats, Dharma protectors, and practitioners meet at a celestial banquet to debate the Dharma, keep watch, deliver beings from calamity, and reflect upon themselves.

It turns out that the loftiest bodhisattva path lies in pure practice that never falters, day after day. Wisdom does not part from compassion, nor compassion from wisdom, as they await the awakening of all sentient beings.
