[A preview of my upcoming novel, The Popular Villain's Secret Identity Performance Record]
Everyone knows that the people around the protagonist are rarely ordinary passersby.
Bo Bei was the exception.
As the protagonist's older brother, he was an out-of-place background character.
After supernatural tales invaded reality, Bo Bei kept showing up at dangerous supernatural sites, yet always came away unharmed and without seeing a thing.
The on-screen comments had a sharp verdict for him: NPC Bro.
[NPC Bro is here! Looking handsome as ever today, bro]
[There's a monster right in front of you and you still don't see it. That's our NPC Bro!]
The System thought so too.
Until the day Bo Bei accidentally fell into the domain of a newly born supernatural tale.
It was about to explain the existence of supernatural tales to him, then trick him while it had the chance. But the next moment, Bo Bei struck and subdued the monster.
There was nothing ordinary about him at all.
The System was stunned.
It watched Bo Bei leave without a hitch, casually pass the Operations Division, which had arrived a moment too late, and successfully catch a bus.
He straightened his slightly rumpled collar, picked up a snack on the way, then returned home as usual and polished off the fried food while listening to his younger brother chatter.
It was so ordinary that what had just happened seemed like an illusion.
...And the person the Operations Division and the protagonist's group were desperately searching for was indeed him: the mysterious figure Fei, who seemed to have precognitive abilities and always dealt with supernatural tales before anyone else could.
The one person to clear the endless supernatural-tale game and return safely to reality.
Feiyu, the highest-authority figure in the Abnormality Surveillance Bureau.
Bo Bei, sneaking past his younger brother every day: This is what makes life exciting.
But they were wrong about one thing. His ability to deal with supernatural tales ahead of everyone else had nothing to do with prophecy.
It was because of the on-screen comments that revealed information about the future.
But in the eyes of the commenters, it all looked completely different.
[We know the protagonist's group and the Operations Division only just got the news, so they couldn't possibly act in time. That means... it's that high-combat-power big shot again!]
[Holy crap, that's a high-risk supernatural tale! What exactly are this big shot's abilities? His power level is completely off the charts!]
[No wonder he turned down the Operations Division and the protagonist's group. The big shot must think they're beneath him]
Bo Bei, who supposedly thought nothing of them: Thanks for the invite. I just don't want my secret identity exposed.
Thanks to this, Bo Bei made his own way in the world of mutations and thrived.
He occasionally teased the protagonist's group and the commenters, dealt with supernatural tales, and searched for a way to restore the world. This routine continued for a long time.
Until one day, the overarching System of the supernatural-tale game appeared again and revealed part of the truth behind the world's mutation.
So Bo Bei returned to the world of supernatural tales. To everyone else, he and Fei disappeared at the same time.
The similarities everyone had overlooked finally became impossible to miss.
Bo Bei never appeared again, but no one gave up searching for him.
On the day they finally found Bo Bei, a special administrative organization from the world of supernatural tales arrived in reality and took control of the highest authority as mediator between reality and the game.
At the negotiation meeting, they met again. The familiar figure now represented the Abnormality Surveillance Bureau.
Untouchable, cold, and arrogant.
He coldly declared that this world was beyond saving, then announced that the Abnormality Surveillance Bureau would officially intervene and everyone would have to follow its orders.
It seemed that this was what he was really like.
After clearing the seemingly endless supernatural-tale game, Bo Bei received a reward.
[Rule Nullification]
The domains of supernatural tales reeked of terror and death, and were built from all kinds of rules.
The supernatural-tale game had merged with reality, and he was the only one no longer bound by its rules.
The game was over long ago, wasn't it?
Content warnings:
* There are lots of on-screen comments, but no comic panels are depicted in the main text. There are occasional comments shipping characters.
* Supernatural-tale story, no high-IQ puzzle solving. Leave your brain at the door and enjoy.
* Max-level expert returns to the beginner village + game invades reality + secret identities. Three delicious tropes in one!
* A classic setup: the protagonist's true identity is awesome and inhuman. There will be some inhuman characterization, and he is not kind by nature. He occasionally acts like a good person because of his family.
* Set in a fictional world. Place names are made up and unrelated to reality.
* Bo Bei is the strongest character, with maxed-out charisma and many devoted fans of his secret identities, of all genders.
Preview of The Popular Villain's Secret Identity Performance Record:
[On-screen comments + delusion-fueled protagonist + secret identities + card battles]
After accidentally entering a comic, Yu Lin became the villain of a popular shonen manga and was bound to a card-drawing System.
The good news: he has a luck buff and can always pull a top-rarity card.
The bad news: as the villain, he's headed for a miserable ending.
When Yu Lin arrived, the villain had already disguised himself as a transfer student and was preparing to get close to the protagonist.
The System advised him to befriend the protagonist. Yu Lin chose card draws over either sucking up to him or provoking him, and knocked out the champion in his first practice match.
Every student: Wait, where did this guy come from?!
Comments: Wok, a powerful and gorgeous new character!
The System was dumbfounded. It was just about to ask Yu Lin what he was doing when the protagonist rushed over and invited him to team up.
Yu Lin smiled. "It's simple, isn't it?"
The System: "..."
How did this turn into the protagonist wanting to get close to you?! This isn't how the story goes!
Now the protagonist's companion, Yu Lin found himself thrust into the spotlight. He had the big shot role the comments had assigned him, and when he looked at the few cards in his hand, he felt he could keep playing the part.
Awakening a new SSR in a desperate situation and turning the tide, always happening to discover enemies lying in wait, rising from the bottom of the individual rankings to first place... The comments and all the students went wild with their theories.
[This little competition probably looks like child's play to our bro]
[With a big shot carrying the team, winning is a piece of cake]
Yu Lin, who had fewer than ten cards: This has gone too far. Don't make things up. I'm really not that good.
The comments were convinced that Yu Lin, a high-powered character, was on the protagonist's side. They never imagined that he was also the villain, a supposed mastermind who only appeared in other people's conversations.
While Yu Lin returned to the villain role and dealt with the truly powerful figures, people kept suspecting his identity. Every day, he teetered on the brink of death.
But his exciting life gradually started to take a strange turn.
Why had the villain's side also started thinking he was their strongest fighter, just like everyone else?!
Hold on, why are you all competing over this? Why are you comparing these two identities of mine?!
Yu Lin, both the savior and the final boss: "..."
Was he going to have to stage a scene where he killed himself? :)
Yu Lin thought the plot was getting bizarre. To avoid complications, he faked his death and went back to being a well-behaved villain.
He had thought his disappearance wouldn't matter.
But reality took a different turn, and the protagonist refused to give up on any trace of him.
Even when Yu Lin appeared again as an enemy, the protagonist was convinced that the corrupt higher-ups had deceived his innocent companion. The commenters were moved to tears, certain he was enduring humiliation for the greater good.
[I'm sobbing. Lin must have been worried those people would hurt his friends. He left because he had no choice, to protect his companions]
[Go, protagonist! Get our companion back!!]
The kidnapped final boss himself: "..."
I'm really the villain.
Before you read:
* The main text has lots of on-screen comments, with occasional comic panels.
* Yu Lin is a carefree troublemaker who enjoys playing games with people and deliberately leading them on. He's kind, but not very.
* A talented character who grows stronger over time, eventually becoming the strongest in the story.
* Lots of delusion-fueled misinterpretations. Both sides have many fervent supporters of different identities, with strong platonic shipping.
