The Holmes Notes

Hello, future me.

Ailiniel once asked Mycroft why he had written those words on the inside cover of his notebook. His answer was, "Because it couldn't be the past me who saw this notebook."

That was no reason at all.

She didn't ask why it couldn't simply say "me." She knew Mycroft wouldn't tell her why.

Just as Mycroft would never tell her what he had written in the notebook he had used for nearly thirty years.

Mycroft kept the notebook carefully hidden on a bookshelf. Even though it was actually Ailiniel's bookshelf, she had never seen it.

"A secret should remain a secret," Mycroft once said. "But if someone needs to keep a secret and still doesn't destroy the record of it, even telling others that the record exists, that proves they actually hope someone will find it."

Ailiniel wasn't particularly keen on solving mysteries. But when a box that seemed to hold a solution, and could be opened at no cost, was placed right in front of you, few people could control their curiosity.
