The Swan's Cry [Western Crossover]

"Freud once said that people often fall in love with someone like themselves, someone they used to be, or someone they want to become." Esther Hope shook her head slowly. "I don't fit any of those descriptions."

"That's absurd. Oranges aren't the only fruit. And there's no one right answer in the world."

The British man who filled her with complicated feelings spoke of love in a cold voice, love that even she could hardly bring herself to believe.

He was no longer the invulnerable machinery of government. About him hung the damp, melancholy atmosphere of Britain, like the hazy, chilly mist just before dawn. He stood in the morning sunlight, shining into the damp life she had lived.

That was the moment she began to fall for him.

"I lost her once. I won't lose her a second time."

He never readily admitted he was in love, yet he always humbled himself for her.

"To some people, blood ties mean family and identity. To me, blood ties are a sin." Esther looked at Lecter in the prison.

His eyes gleamed reddish brown, and an evil smile played at the corners of his mouth. "You know you shouldn't leave any descendants. Our family has this terrible gift. You and I have both proved that."
