Yu Bai, a writer of bargain-basement fiction, rented a room in the city’s most notorious haunted apartment complex to do research. Before long, he began to suspect that his next-door neighbor was a very strange person.

So he knocked on the neighbor’s door and politely asked, “Are you human?”

Behind the door, Xie Wufang’s expression shifted as he tried to recall the relevant advice from The Guide to Human Life. At last, he nodded with forced composure.

Having received his answer, Yu Bai turned and walked away with a calm expression.

Great. Definitely not human.

A week later, thoroughly fed up, Yu Bai knocked on his strange neighbor’s door again, doing his best to stay calm. “Could you move out?”

Xie Wufang had memorized the guide by now. He smiled with just the right amount of friendliness. “Sorry, have I been making too much noise?”

Yu Bai’s smile didn’t reach his eyes. “The man next door plays the drums with bones every day, and the elementary school kid downstairs crawls out of the pipes at night and asks me to help with her homework.”

Xie Wufang saw nothing strange about this and helpfully suggested, “That’s a disturbance of the peace. You should call the police.”

Yu Bai finally lost his patience. He leaned forward, grabbed his mysterious neighbor by the collar, and said each word slowly and clearly. “Stop. Pretending.”

“Either make everything around here go back to normal.”

“Or get out.”

What he didn’t know was that his mysterious neighbor had been doing his best to keep his powers in check. It was just that the ordinary humans around him were so fragile that even a tiny leak of divine power could cause absurd mutations.

At that moment, Xie Wufang, experiencing close contact with a human for the first time, lost focus under the fearless threat of the person before him.

So this was how warm human skin felt.
