Capitalists Are All Vampires

In the space of a year, Yu Xian goes from an innocent, clueless college graduate to a mistreated, bitter 996 office drone. In the end, he furiously quits after losing his entire performance bonus for not getting up at midnight on a Sunday to revise a proposal for his boss.

He plans to lie flat, but with bills to pay, Yu Xian turns around and interviews at a new company.

The new company is a little strange. Its office building is gloomy and isolated, overgrown with ivy. The office is blocked from every ray of sunlight by thick curtains, and the interviewer asks bizarre questions.

Interviewer: Are you afraid of ghosts?

Yu Xian, a firm materialist, was about to shake his head. But thinking of how he had been exploited by his previous capitalist overlord, he jokes, "As long as they're not vampires, I'm fine."

Yu Xian is secretly congratulating himself on his wit when an eerie silence falls over the office. It envelops both the interviewer in front of him and the man sitting in the shadows, his face hidden, with only his long, slender, deathly pale fingers clasped together visible.

Yu Xian gets the job, but the strange occurrences only grow more frequent. The office computer makes hoarse, eerie noises at night. Some brat has left red handprints smeared across the office windows. The lights keep flickering and burning out, no matter how often they are replaced.

At the end of his three-day trial period, the interviewer cautiously asks whether he plans to quit. Yu Xian replies, "Quit? No way. With the salary your boss is offering, I'll die before I leave this company."

The computer is making creepy noises? No problem. A smack cures all ills. Yu Xian shouts "Hi-yah!" and whacks it hard with a peach branch he picked up by the road.

Some brat's smeared red handprints everywhere? Yu Xian grabs the kid, whose face is painted blue and green, and makes him stand in the sun as punishment.

The lights keep burning out? Yu Xian pulls out a Buddha candleholder he bought from a roadside stall and lights a candle in the office. Energy-efficient and eco-friendly.

The computer works again, the brat doesn't dare come back, and the lights never burn out again after he lights the candleholder. Yu Xian claps his hands, ready to retire after a job well done, when some lunatic appears from who knows where, pointing at his handsome, refined boss and yelling that he's a vampire, an evil dark overlord.

Yu Xian is furious. "What vampire? Do you know how generous his salary is? How kind he is, how much he cares about his employees? Don't you dare slander him!"

He protects his gentle, kind boss, who never speaks up even when people slander him, and calls the police to have these lunatics arrested.

But after one group is taken away, another shows up, and strange things keep happening at the company.

Later, Yu Xian finally realizes that those people weren't lying. His boss really is a vampire.

At the same time, he comes to understand that there are no kind, selfless capitalists in this world. If they aren't after your body to make you work like a beast of burden, then they're plotting to get it some other way.
