While surfing the internet, Asami Wakaba was drawn to a game ad that popped up on a webpage. The game was called The Unspeakable Jujutsu High, which sounded very Lovecraftian. As a devoted fan of Call of Cthulhu tabletop role-playing videos, she eagerly clicked on the game.
To give herself the best gaming experience, she maxed out appearance, shooting, agility, and luck, determined to be a beautiful, high-firepower turret.
As she admired her character card with satisfaction, she suddenly noticed the name of the technique listed on it:
[Technique: Schrödinger's Dice]
Wait, wasn't this just a dice girl bound to her character?
It sounded like a technique that could be either powerful or weak. With good luck, she could defeat monsters above her level; with bad luck, monsters below her level could beat her.
At least she'd raised her luck to 90.
She sighed and entered the game.
The game opened with the character standing in front of the gate of a place called Tokyo Metropolitan Jujutsu Technical High School. She moved her character through the gate, and as soon as she entered the campus, a prompt popped up on the screen.
[Make an Idea roll.]
An Idea roll? They're starting this strong?
She clicked the die in the center of the screen.
The die on the computer screen began spinning rapidly. When it finally stopped, a string of text appeared on the interface.
[Idea] Check/result: 65/1
Asami Wakaba: ...
A critical success.
As she wondered with mixed feelings whether she had unbelievably bad luck, the text on that cursed interface changed in an instant.
[Sanity check: Success, 1d10. Failure, 1d100.]
Asami Wakaba: ...Wait, did an Old One just descend? Why is it 1d100 now? And why are both success and failure 1d100?
She clicked the die again, still grumbling to herself.
[Sanity] Check/result: 65/100
Asami Wakaba: ...
A fumble?
No way. My luck's this bad from the start?
Unwilling to give up, she clicked the die on the screen and rolled again.
[Sanity: 1d100=100]
Asami Wakaba: ...
Did I go permanently insane from the start... Wait, am I dead?
Just as she thought she would have to play the game controlling a raving lunatic, her character suddenly collapsed limply on the ground. At the same time, the screen in front of her went black, and the words GAME OVER appeared in blood red from deep within the screen.
She stared at the string of red letters and, for some reason, felt a chill. Then her own vision went black, and she lost consciousness.
In the last moment before passing out, she thought, That really was terrifying.
I even had a real-life Sanity check.
