He keeps the little animals in cages and carries them on his back as he runs. Baibai swims over to him. “Quack, quack, quack.” Then he swims around to the man’s right. “Quack, quack, quack.” The director looks at him coldly, until he hears an astonished voice beside him. “Quack, quack, quack! Good heavens, he can carry three lions, two tigers, two bears, and so many other animals…” “Fugui, bring me my phone.” The blue cat rummages through the travel bag behind Baibai and takes out the phone. The director grabs Baibai by the neck and lifts him up, examining him carefully. Baibai, Duck No. 619, juvenile, not yet transformed. As they struggle to survive, their group grows larger and larger. Using human intelligence, Baibai gradually earns respect among the animals. “The Duck King! Baibai is the Duck King!” Baibai puffs out his round, fluffy chest and floats proudly at the crest of the waves. At night, Baibai lies in a man’s arms, his eyes curved into crescents. The next morning, the man wakes up lying in Baibai’s arms, shrunk down into a tiny bundle. Baibai scratches his head with a wing. How… did he grow up? The director opens his eyes and looks at the enormous creature before him without surprise. He gently parts Baibai’s wings and burrows into the warm space between his belly and side. “Let me hide here. It’s warm.” No melodramatic heartbreak, just fluffy healing from beginning to end.
