A Bowl for the World

Discover the flavors of Xiangyang. One bowl of beef noodles holds three thousand years of an ancient city's fortunes and turmoil, and brims with a lifetime's worth of everyday warmth.

The bold spirit of the Three Kingdoms blends into the hot, chili-red broth, while flavors from north and south mingle with chewy alkaline noodles. In this city at the crossroads of seven provinces, the simplest joys, sorrows, and steadfast devotion are all hidden in the curling steam of noodle shops.

The old street's bricks and tiles have been replaced time and again, yet the lights of the old noodle shop at the alley's entrance have never gone out. Hands kneading dough at four in the morning preserve an intangible heritage passed down through generations. Bowls of noodles still steaming late at night warm every traveler passing through from north or south.

At thirty, Lin Wan's marriage falls apart, and she leaves with nothing but the clothes on her back. With her daughter, she falls from a prosperous metropolis back to the bottom in her hometown. She once fought desperately to escape the everyday bustle, turning her back on her father's hopes for the family noodle shop. In the end, it is the warmth of a bowl of beef noodles that helps her pick up the pieces and start her life anew.

Her childhood friend quits her job and returns home, putting down roots in the countryside and creating a restorative coffee garden. Her closest friend remains in the deep mountains, carrying on Xiangyang's century-old tradition of making fragrant high-mountain tea.

The three women never undermine one another. Instead, they support each other as they put down roots and grow against the odds in their own fields.

Every bite of noodles reveals the many faces of ordinary life. Every bowl of soup and every meal is filled with human warmth. Every day brings ties to home and the longing for one's roots. The most healing thing is never a stunning reversal of fortune, but the peace and openness of holding on to one's original hopes and returning home amid the bustle of everyday life.
