A Bowl for the World

Discover the flavors of Xiangyang. A bowl of beef noodles can hold the rise and fall of a 3,000-year-old city, and brim with the everyday warmth of half a lifetime.

The grandeur of the Three Kingdoms simmers in the red-oil broth, while northern and southern flavors meld with springy alkaline noodles. In this city at the crossroads of seven provinces, the simplest joys and sorrows, and the quietest acts of perseverance, are all tucked into the curling steam rising from noodle shops.

The old street's bricks and tiles have changed over the years, but the lights of the old noodle shop at the alley's entrance have never gone out. Hands kneading dough at four in the morning preserve a craft passed down through generations. Bowls of noodles still steaming late at night warm every traveler passing through from near and far.

At thirty, Lin Wan's marriage falls apart, and she leaves with nothing, bringing her daughter from a prosperous metropolis back to the depths of her hometown. Yet in the warmth of a bowl of beef noodles, she pieces herself back together and starts her life anew.

Her childhood friend quits her job and returns home, putting down roots in the countryside to create a restorative coffee garden. Her closest friend stays in the deep mountains, carrying on the century-old craft of Xiangyang's premium fragrant tea.

The most healing thing is never some earth-shattering comeback, but finding peace and confidence in the everyday world by staying true to yourself and returning home.
