Beneath the Coating: Desire and Probability in Scratch-Offs

Not much fun. They’re everywhere near my home. A thin scratch-off ticket, its silver-gray coating concealing more than a prize: it covers the ordinary person’s hopes for good luck. This book steps into the lottery shop, a miniature theater of human life, to unpack the design logic and probability behind instant-win tickets, and examine how intermittent rewards tug at people’s hearts. There are no winning secrets, and no promises of getting rich overnight. Instead, it records the many lives behind each ticket, separates rumor from truth, and explores the line between entertainment and addiction. When our fingertips scratch away the coating, what we really see is the desire in our own hearts.
