Neural Cinema: The Boundaries of the Heart

In 2042, a Chinese neuroscience team develops the Neural Imaging System (NIS). Using a brain-computer interface to capture neural signals and AI models to decode them, it generates visual images in real time. The basic version can recreate recent memories and fragments of dreams, helping awaken memories in Alzheimer’s patients and assisting communication for people who have lost the ability to speak. The enhanced version can penetrate the surface of consciousness to uncover subconscious trauma and unspoken imaginings, and even alter memory nodes. Hailed at first as “a beacon illuminating the human heart,” the technology soon becomes ensnared in an ethical maelstrom between “healing” and “control”: investors covet its commercial potential in customized memories and emotional commodities, while its developers struggle with the line between “saving” people and “doing evil.”
