Daily Question: Did Matsuda Save the World Today?

Matsuda, age 29.

A retired Grade 1 jujutsu sorcerer, now a police officer in the Special Management Department, he crossed into another world at the last moment of a showdown in Shibuya.

The good news: his childhood friend, who had died years ago, was alive in this world, along with every one of his other classmates from that time.

The bad news: this was another parallel world, one that didn't belong to his timeline.

Why?

Because the childhood friend who had died years ago had another, younger version of him by his side.

And why else?

Because he wasn't human now. He was a little! Cat!

Just as Matsuda (the 29-year-old version) licked his paws and pondered his life, a System claiming to save people from tragic regrets bound itself to him. The System told him that if he cooperated and completed missions, he could gather energy and change the outcome of his friends' deaths.

Matsuda fell silent. Matsuda decided to agree.

Since he'd been given a chance to change the ending, all he had to do was hit the gas and charge straight ahead, right?

Just before graduation, Hagiwara and Matsuda got ambushed by a cat.

Matsuda thought the curly-haired cat had a powerful sense of deja vu. Its face practically said, “Don't mess with me, human.” It seemed to have nothing but contempt for ordinary people, yet insisted on hanging around them and following them everywhere.

Who knew what it was like to find this cat staring at them with eerie blue eyes in the middle of the night? Even more incredible, the cat would stake out the police academy entrance at the same time every day and track them. Who would compete with a cat at this sort of thing? The important thing was that they couldn't beat it.

Unable to take it any longer, Matsuda picked up the cat and demanded, “What exactly are you following us for?!” The curly-haired cat, in a remarkably humanlike gesture, pulled out a little sign that read, “Please adopt me.”

Matsuda: “...” Is there something wrong with this cat?

Hagiwara: “...” You're right, Jinpei.

Hagiwara and Matsuda were delighted to become pet owners, only to realize that something was amiss. This cat was way too humanlike!

How could a cat show up at a crime scene and demonstrate how to defuse a bomb with its bare paws?

How could a cat compete with its owner to take apart a model? That was a limited edition!

How could a cat pick fights with thin air every day?

Wait, how could a cat turn into a person, too?!

A police officer ready to bravely sacrifice himself on a Ferris wheel stared, dumbfounded, as a certain curly-haired cat who insisted on coming along suddenly transformed into a person right before his eyes.

Hagiwara: T-Two Jinpeis... Is this heaven? Hagi is so happy!
