A Researcher's Notes on Otherworldly Beings

[Second person, episodic short stories] Various kinds of nonhumans x you, a part-time researcher + With graduation just around the corner, you receive a one-of-a-kind research assignment from your advisor. And so begins your journey studying nonhumans in other worlds, armed with nothing but a tablet. You thought it was a world-class project, and that you’d be working with refined scholars and professors, plus knowledgeable, handsome assistants. But when the project officially started, the higher-ups had only bothered to give you a lab coat. You didn’t understand, but you had no choice but to accept their decision. You don’t speak the language, so you can only communicate with the nonhumans through the translator on your tablet. You have no equipment, so much of the time you have to use your own hands to examine them inch by inch and take measurements. You have no assistant, so you have to do everything yourself, including, but not limited to, using special methods to soothe certain aggressive nonhumans during their special periods. And you still don’t have… Well, there are plenty of things you don’t have, but none of that matters. The real problem is that you’re not qualified for this field, yet you’re the one chosen to travel between worlds. That means no matter what happens… you have to grit your teeth and deal with it. …Including, but not limited to, being carried off by an evil dragon to its cave to incubate dragon eggs; being run through by a fallen angel’s sword of judgment alongside an innocent “orc adulterer” who got caught in the crossfire; nearly drowning on the seafloor at the hands of a mermaid in her breeding season; or being tossed over the shoulder and hauled off without a word by a lizardman you’ve only just met. Oh, honestly, none of that is really a big deal. Just little things. As long as you don’t think about quitting and leaving, the nonhumans are actually pretty nice. Incidentally, your resignation letter from last month was rejected again. The higher-ups replied: As long as you’re not dead, you have to keep researching~ So keep up the good work, Miss Researcher. + Content warnings + Second-person narration, with you as the protagonist + Everyone except you is a nonhuman, with a little angst + Short stories written for practice, updated whenever inspiration strikes.
