The Lantern by the Bridge Shines Only Until the Ghost Festival

There's a Lantern Bridge over the old city river, and it lights up for just one night each year, during the Ghost Festival. When the lanterns glow, the barrier between the living and the dead briefly opens, letting the living meet departed souls once. At the hour of the tiger, the rooster crows, the lanterns go out, and the living and the dead part, never to meet again.

Shen Yu has been waiting here for Wen Sui for three years.

Wen Sui died in a car accident and went to the underworld, where she lives a nine-to-five routine in the realm of the dead: clocking in at work, browsing the ghost market, and bickering with her ghostly roommates. Life in the underworld is lively and funny, except that her spirit is forever cold and she can no longer taste the sweetness of the human world.

In the fourth year, the Ghost Festival lanterns light up right on schedule. Wen Sui comes along the light, but this time she's here to say goodbye and urge him not to keep coming every year to wait for her.

One lives in the world of the living, with its meals and seasons, slowly moving forward; the other lives in the land of the dead, waiting in line for reincarnation and following her own path home. They gaze at each other across the divide of life and death, sometimes stealing a brief moment together. When they laugh and chat, the breeze is gentle and the sun warm; when parting and obsession surface, storm winds rise and thunder rolls across the river.

The lanterns will light up every year, but some waits are meant to come to an end.

A meeting is a gift; there is no need to force a reunion.
