August Tides, the Letter I Couldn't Send

Every midsummer, Lu Yu heads to the seaside town of Lanyu to spend a short summer vacation at his grandmother's house. At the fishing harbor, he meets Shen Zhixia, a girl working at a general store. The sea breeze, the rocks, the shallows left behind by the receding tide, and the seashells that hold their secrets become something uniquely theirs.

The two teenagers understand each other without a word, quietly guarding their budding feelings and never confessing outright. They write their little thoughts on the insides of shells and hide them in the cracks between the rocks, waiting for the tide. But summer always comes to an end. When the vacation is over, Lu Yu must return to the city, while Shen Zhixia is about to move away with her family. Their summer encounter is destined to end all too soon.

The years flow by. Lu Yu grows up, studies, works, and weathers life's ups and downs. He thinks his youthful crush has receded with the tide and faded with time. Many years later, he returns to Lanyu Harbor. The old courtyard is still there, and the tide sounds as it always did. When he goes back to the rocky shore from those days, he finally finds the note the girl left inside a shell: a letter from years ago that never reached his hands.

It turns out they both carried the same feelings back then, but fear and missed chances sank their confessions forever beneath the August tide. This is a gentle regret spanning youth and adulthood. It tells of small-town life, youthful longing, and fate's cruel turns, of a love hidden among the waves that neither of them ever managed to put into words.

Theme: This story portrays the restrained, unspoken feelings of youth and the regret and redemption brought about by fate pulling people out of step. A reunion does not have to end in a happily shared life. Even when people miss their chance, the sincerity of young love can still illuminate the long years ahead, teaching them to make peace with regret and cherish the once passionate, pure feelings they shared.
