Xing'an Ridge, 1984: A Hunter's Rebirth and Revenge

Liu Yapeng, a sixty-year-old hunter from the Greater Khingan Mountains, died in a dilapidated hut on his birthday.

When he opened his eyes again, he was back in 1984, on the night he married Wang Hongxing.

The woman before him was shy and delicate, but he knew she was carrying another man's bastard, already two months along.

Outside, his father-in-law, Wang Daqing, deputy director of the commune's Revolutionary Committee, was waiting for him to marry into the family as a “fallback son-in-law,” so he could use Liu's rifle and strength to support the whole Wang clan.

In his previous life, he believed them.

He believed Wang Hongxing's tears and Wang Daqing's lie that “I treat you like my own son.”

The game he hunted fed the Wangs, and the money he earned selling pelts paid for his three brothers-in-law to get married. When he wore himself down with injuries and illness, it was Li Xiaobei, the childhood friend next door he'd always ignored, who stole the money set aside for food and used it to buy him life-saving medicine.

Only when he was left to freeze to death alone did he learn the truth.

This time, Liu Yapeng smiled.

That very night, he turned the carefully faked “blood of a maiden” into a real miscarriage.

The next day, he “thoughtfully” took Wang Hongxing to the clinic, where the doctor announced in front of everyone that she had been two months pregnant and had miscarried.

On the third day, he used his left hand to write three letters of denunciation and slipped them into the offices of the county Discipline Inspection Commission, the regional newspaper, and the home of the father of the “bastard,” Deputy Director Li of the County Revolutionary Committee.

A storm swept through Hongxing Commune in an instant.

Wang Daqing was thrown behind bars, and the Wang family scattered like monkeys when their tree fell.

Liu Yapeng reclaimed the betrothal gifts, shouldered his grandfather's hunting knife and Water-Linked Pearl rifle, and plunged into the howling snowstorms of the Greater Khingan Mountains.
