Midnight Frequency: Unknowable Echoes of the City

Working late into the night had become Chen Mo's routine, an escape from his crowded apartment and tedious life. His old radio was his only companion, and he searched through the static of the city's airwaves for a little comfort. Then, one rainy night, the dial slipped onto a frequency that had never existed. There were no commercials or time announcements, only cryptic broadcasts of urban legends that sounded like sleep-talk, accompanied by a steady, churning static, thick as a tide. At first, Chen Mo thought it was just some underground station putting on airs. But the places mentioned in the broadcasts lay at street corners along his daily commute, and their descriptions of bizarre disappearances eerily matched news reports from a few days earlier. More unsettling still, after each show he would glimpse incomprehensible graffiti in familiar corners of the city, hear wet scraping sounds behind walls that couldn't possibly fit the building's structure, and dream again and again of the shadow of a tower that defied geometry. He began keeping records, hoping to find a pattern, only to discover that the frequency was quietly corroding his mind. Common sense was unraveling. Beneath the city's steel jungle, something immense and blindly mindless seemed to pulse in time with the midnight broadcasts. And Chen Mo, an accidental listener, was he slipping toward a reality he had never imagined and could not bear, or had he already become part of it?
