A Concubine-Born Daughter Enters Office: From County Court to the Golden Throne Hall

In the Great Jing Dynasty, the ironclad law barring women from government service was an insurmountable barrier, but it could not stop Su Qingyuan from longing to break free of her shackles. The daughter of a disgraced official, she concealed her identity and entered the county yamen as an adviser. Armed with a photographic memory and a meticulous mind, she started by settling petty disputes among the people, then solved one strange case after another and won justice for the wronged, gradually earning her superiors’ recognition.

From the county yamen to the prefectural government, then on to the Court of Judicial Review in the capital, she overcame every obstacle in her path. Faced with the disdain and exclusion of her colleagues, the oppression and frame-ups of the powerful, and the open and covert struggles between factions at court, she stood her ground. With strategy as her blade and justice as her shield, she exposed corrupt officials’ schemes and rooted out traitors who colluded with the enemy. In a government dominated by men, she carved out a path for herself against all odds.

She had no golden finger, only hard work and the courage to stay calm in a crisis. She had to clear her family’s name, but she also meant to shatter gender prejudice and prove that women, too, could shine at court. In the end, she rose to the highest rank and became the first woman to serve as Grand Censor in the history of the Great Jing Dynasty, writing a legend of a phoenix soaring to the clouds and holding the court in her power.
