The Campaign Against the Japanese Pirates

During the Jiajing era of the Ming dynasty, Japanese pirates ravaged the coast of Zhejiang. Lu Changfeng, the son of a fisherman, sought revenge for his father's murder. He joined forces with fishermen and miners to form the Sea Eagle Volunteer Army, using fishing boats and fish spears to wage a guerrilla campaign against the pirates in the Yandang Mountains. They alternated between cooperation and friction with Qi Jiguang's army, repeatedly defeating the pirates: setting clever ambushes to intercept grain ships, disguising themselves to infiltrate and destroy their lairs, and attacking a victory celebration in Taizhou by land and sea. Faced with court officials who opposed the war, traitors in their ranks, and shortages of supplies, Lu Changfeng grew from a “avenger” into a true commander and realized that fighting the pirates was not about one man's revenge, but the peace of countless families. After eight years of bitter fighting, the volunteers joined forces with Qi Jiguang's army to clear the Japanese pirates from the southeast and restore peace to the coast. Told from the perspective of ordinary people, the novel portrays the ingenuity and courage of the grassroots resistance against the pirates, and explores the patriotic conviction that “every person is responsible for defending their homeland.”
