From Soy Sauce Spills to a Golden Anniversary: Love Lives in Everyday Moments

At the heart of the story is the love between Wang Yuanjunjie and Ni Fanxi, with the lives and bustle of an old alley woven all around them. From their first meeting as teenagers, when they knocked over a bottle of soy sauce, to a chalk fight in their high school classroom, then studying side by side by the floor-to-ceiling windows of the university library, their feelings quietly blossom amid the scent of herbs from the Chinese medicine shop, the bustle of the supply and marketing cooperative, and the teasing of their old neighbors.

The medicine grinder at the Wang family’s Jishitang pharmacy turns with the passage of time, while the Zhu family’s sewing basket mends the everyday. Wang Bisuo and Zhu Liuyu’s bickering conceals a tenderness; the innocent words of the Li Tian siblings provide the perfect assist; and Dai Qinglong goes from troublemaker to protector. From the pledge they make before the college entrance exams to the ring they exchange at graduation, from the red candles in their new home to the peaceful years surrounded by their children, their love is never earth-shattering. Instead, it is written in the bowl of hot soup they save for each other, the umbrella they share on rainy days, and the light left on late at night: a quiet, steady devotion that lasts a lifetime.

When the old alley is demolished, the neighbors move into new buildings, bringing along the pharmacy sign, the tools from the shoe-repair stall, and the tailor’s scissors. What doesn’t change is how warmly they still drop by one another’s homes. When their black hair turns gray, the white-haired couple at their golden anniversary celebration watch their grandchildren play and finally understand: the best years are the ones spent growing old with you amid the bustle of everyday life. The scent of herbs fills the years, and love letters are hidden in the ordinary.
