A Once-in-a-Lifetime Romance That Shook the Stars with a Braised-Food Stall

When Dai Qinglong took the pork rib rice Sun Fanxi offered him beside the trash cans at the end of the alley, he never imagined that this half-portion of warm takeout would change both their lives.

He was a street drifter handing out flyers, raised beside his grandfather’s braised-food stall after his parents divorced. Sun Fanxi was a deaf assistant at a law firm, carrying the loneliness of being cut off from the world inside his hearing aids. They agreed to trade “organizing files for a boxed meal,” and their crooked notes and red-pen edits began to spark an unspoken understanding between them. Then, in the middle of an argument with a client, the sharp clatter of Sun Fanxi’s hearing aid hitting the ground awakened Dai Qinglong’s awkward urge to protect him.

From deliberately taking a detour just to greet him face-to-face, to huddling together under one jacket on a stormy night; from stumbling through signs at a sign-language club, to giving the loudest applause at a charity performance, two souls pushed to the margins of life kept wavering between misunderstanding and closeness. When Sun Fanxi’s hearing test flashed red again, Dai Qinglong held up his sign-language certificate and said, “I’ll be with you.” At last, they understood: a place in the sun isn’t a flawless, cloudless sky. It’s the light someone still chooses to save for you, shining through the cracks between you.

The aroma of braised food mingled with the ink from sign-language textbooks, bearing witness to how two ordinary people turned the warmth of pork rib rice and the care in their handwritten notes into a sweetness that would last a lifetime, stewing their loneliness together into something they could share.
