His Bullet Casing Soaked in the Supply Co-op’s Brown Sugar

At the county supply cooperative in 1985, sales clerk Ye Qianke is locked in a standoff with Zhu Zizizi over three jin of brown sugar. Then Luo Xingwu, a demobilized soldier, suddenly says, “Don't accuse people without evidence,” setting off a clash between the two. She's so meticulous that she'll turn up a sleeve to look for sugar crumbs; he's so taciturn that he simply steps in to shield her from street thugs. This unlikely “dream team” sparks a blazing romance amid ledgers and bullet casings.

Ye Qianke can calculate the profits and losses of her three-foot counter, but she can't figure out the tenderness Luo Xingwu hides behind his military medals. Luo Xingwu can shoulder heavy loads in the warehouse, but he can't resist the bowl of ginger soup she brings him. From teaming up to expose Zhu Xiaobao's fake accounts, to carrying her through floodwaters on a stormy night to save the ledgers; from finding a way to sell Lan Jindie's honey, to helping Murong Li negotiate a foreign trade order, they turn their constant bickering into a tacit understanding: “You do the books, I'll have your back.”

When the old supply cooperative is replaced by the Xingke Supermarket sign, and the bullet-casing pendant reflects their silver hair at their golden wedding anniversary, Ye Qianke finally understands: his words, “It's my duty,” had been hiding a lifetime of devotion. Luo Xingwu, too, realizes that the crisp clack of her abacus has long since become the steadiest beat in his life.

This isn't a world-shaking legend, just two ordinary people who make a life out of taking things seriously and warm the years with their steadfast devotion. Like the old counter at the supply cooperative, the longer it is worn, the more it holds the warmth and tenderness of everyday life.
