The Sin Enlightenment Diagram

Chen Shubai never believed in gods or demons.

He was the youngest Chinese artifact conservator at the British Museum, someone who used science and his own hands to converse with history. Then the ancient Ming dynasty painting he had restored was stolen, and the seven “people” who had slept within it for six hundred years all opened their eyes.

He was forced into seven layers of illusion, each a trial that made the heart its prison. Pride made him an emperor above all others. Envy cast him outside everyone else’s happiness. Wrath gave him the power to burn everything to ashes. Sloth tempted him to stop with the promise that lying flat meant freedom. Greed showed him an abyss that could never be filled. Gluttony sought to fill the hollow within him with endless desire. Lust became the hardest trial, cloaked in the deepest longing.

He thought his enemies were the Seven Deadly Sins.

He didn’t know his true enemy was a “perfect self” that had never committed a single sin.

This is a journey into the human heart, spanning East and West. The West says sin is a fall from grace. The East says attachment is itself an affliction. The truth lies behind the painting’s seventh seal: what it imprisons is not a demon, but humanity’s final attachment to the “perfect self.”

Bodhi was never a tree, nor is the bright mirror a stand. Since there is nothing to begin with, where can dust alight?
