I Insist on Throwing Myself at Him

On the day Chang’an fell, Princess Song Zhaozhao tumbled from the city wall and landed right in the arms of General Pei Changqing.

He was poisoned and covered in blood, yet he used the last of his strength to shield her. As thunder crashed down, Song Zhaozhao heard him whisper in her ear, “Zhaozhao, don’t cry.”

It was the gentlest thing she had ever heard him say.

When she opened her eyes again, she had returned to a time when the country had not fallen, her family was still alive, and the stone-faced general was safe and sound.

Song Zhaozhao decided that this time, she would throw all shame to the wind.

In her previous life, everyone in the city knew she pursued him, while he quietly kept his distance. This time, she went even further, clinging to him more tightly, flirting with him more boldly, and sticking to him more stubbornly.

All of Chang’an knew Princess Zhaozhao was head over heels for General Pei. She might as well have written it across her face.

But no one knew that the ever-expressionless general, who kept everyone at arm’s length, would clench his fists in the dead of night and grind his teeth until they creaked, all because she had smiled at some young nobleman during the day.

He held back again and again, until his eyes reddened and the veins stood out on his brow.

At last, one day, he cornered her behind a rockery in the imperial garden, his voice so hoarse it barely sounded like his own.

“Princess, my life belongs to you. Could you… take only my life?”
