Campus Rental House: My Roommates Are a Bunch of Demons

When Lin Xiaoman, a shy girl who struggles with social anxiety, opens the door to the “campus rental house,” a story quietly unfolds where fantasy and everyday life intertwine.

This light campus novel, billed as a “human-and-monster house-sharing” story, hides a deeply moving tale of growing up and forging bonds, one that brings tears to your eyes even as it makes you laugh.

The story's charm lies in how it blends its fantastical premise with the bustle of daily life. A fox-spirit landlady who sheds fur, a timid kappa boy, and a sloth-demon senior who is sleepy but dependable: these adorable monster housemates aren't distant fantasy figures. They're “family” who steal takeout, help with homework, and stand shoulder to shoulder in front of the house when the demolition crew arrives.

Lin Xiaoman's growth is especially touching. Once an insecure girl ostracized for being able to “see monsters,” she becomes a defender who dares to stand before a bulldozer and tell the story of their home. Her courage doesn't come from superpowers, but from the acceptance and trust her housemates give her. Just as the text monster Motuan draws strength from “warm words,” Lin Xiaoman pieces together her own “armor of courage” through the little moments of sharing a home.

There are no clear-cut heroes and villains in this book, only the kindness of seeing things from another's perspective. The pursuers from the monster world have their reasons, the demolition crew's harshness stems from the pressures of their work, and even the seemingly villainous monster elder is eventually moved by the warmth of “shared memories resonating.” This belief in “letting go of conflict and embracing coexistence” gives the story the power to heal, beneath its lighthearted comedy.

It turns out that the most moving kind of fantasy doesn't come from earth-shattering magic, but from the warmth of strangers becoming family through the bonds they share.
