The Girls of the Red Chamber

When the ill-fated beauties of the classical Red Chamber world fall into the modern world of elite schools and wealthy families, their tragic destinies are rewritten completely.

Behind the glittering world of the Grand View Garden circle lie social conventions, family ties that bind, calculated marriages, and prejudice between social groups. These forces trap four young women with very different strengths of character. Daiyu is sensitive and pensive, Baochai is constrained by the need to please everyone, Xiangyun hides her loneliness, and Tanchun is held back by the barriers of her status as a concubine’s daughter. All four are caught in the difficulties of their family backgrounds and struggle to find their footing amid the warmth and coldness of human relationships.

They break free from social shackles and sever the chains of fate: Daiyu finds a sense of self and purpose through her writing, Baochai casts off convention to discover her true self, Xiangyun strengthens her character and turns toward the light, and Tanchun uses her abilities to overcome class barriers and build a career. When the wealthy world collapses and their family’s great house comes crashing down, the four fall from their lofty perch but do not lose their dignity. In desperate circumstances, they rescue and heal themselves, turning the tide against all odds.

The complete story charts the growth and transformation of the young women of the Red Chamber, tearing up the old verdicts written for them.

There is no tragic ending, only year after year of growth and fulfillment, showing how women can shape their own lives. These four women are never defined by fate. They do not rely on others or follow convention. Through their own convictions and perseverance, they break free of destiny, shine on their own terms, and live lives of their own making.
