A Map of the Western Regions

This military and war novel spans seven volumes. Its central thread is the “Western Regions Map,” which unfolds into a sweeping portrait of Silk Road civilization across several dynasties. The early volumes depict the surveying of the Western Regions and the beginnings of a joint defense among its states. Then, during “Zhongzong’s Restoration,” Su Lie coordinates the defenses while Li Qing carries on the art of mapmaking, showing the stability of the Western Regions alliance and the early growth of Eurasian trade routes amid political upheaval in the Central Plains. Later, during “Xuanzong’s New Policies,” trade routes, shared technology, and cultural exchange drive the story toward the climax of creating a “Complete Map of Eurasia.” Each volume is firmly rooted in its historical setting, weaving historical detail and the characters’ fates together.

The “Western Regions Map” is more than a geographic record: it is a bridge between civilizations. From its practical use in marking trade routes and defenses to its role as a medium for spreading technology and fostering mutual aid, it bears witness to the blending of Central Plains porcelain and Western Regions glassmaking techniques. It records the peace efforts behind Tibetan treaties and joint military exercises among several nations, while also carrying on the mapmakers’ legacy of “protecting the map and safeguarding the roads,” embodied by Shen Yan, Li Qing, and others. The author depicts a vivid cast with a delicate touch: Su Lie’s military strategy, Li Qing’s dedication to his craft, and the lively interactions among envoys and artisans from different nations. The Silk Road is no longer an abstract concept, but a warm and human space for dialogue between civilizations.

The work combines historical weight with literary tension. It recreates both the prosperity and challenges of the medieval Silk Road, while the creation of the “Complete Map of Eurasia” echoes the timeless theme of civilizations coming together.
