Llosa's Works: the City and the Dog

(peru)mario Vargas Llosa

255K0

The story begins with several military academy cadets planning to steal chemistry test papers and sell test questions. The school authorities discovered the theft and ordered the thief to surrender, otherwise the entire class would be punished. Someone reported the thief, and the "boss" of the theft gang vowed to find the informer. Soon, during a live-fire exercise, a cadet nicknamed "Slave" was shot and killed... "City and Dogs" was written by Vargas Llosa based on his personal experience of studying in a military academy as a boy. It is set on the Leoncio Prado Military School in Lima, the capital of Peru, and the bustling city of Lima. It revolves around several military academy cadets and depicts the brutal lives of the cadets and their various conflicts with the school authorities. This was the first novel published by Vargas Llosa when he was 27 years old. In 1962, before the novel was published, it won the Spanish Concise Book Series Award. After its publication in 1963, it won the Spanish Critics Award, making Vargas Llosa famous in one fell swoop. The novel was banned in the author's native Peru shortly after its publication. The military government at the time burned 1,500 copies of the Peruvian edition of "Cities and Dogs" at the Leoncio Prado Military School, the author's alma mater. The City and the Dog is considered by some critics to be one of four landmark novels (the other three being Carlos Fuentes' "The Death of Artemio Cross," Julio Cortázar's "Hopscotch" and García Márquez's "One Hundred Years of Solitude") that marked the unfolding of the Latin American literary explosion. In 2001, the book was selected as one of the "100 Best Spanish Novels of the 20th Century" by Spanish newspaper El Mundo.

Feng Lili

182K0

This book is the second literary work of writer Feng Lili, which stems from her experience of working as a waiter undercover in a hotel for several months. "I" tells the daily life of a group of young waitresses from the dual perspective of an observer and a witness: they work day after day in exchange for meager wages and a rough life, and are accustomed to an arbitrary increase in workload and simple and even poor living conditions; they bully, quarrel, scheme, and help each other, go shopping and have fun together; they suffer harsh and unreasonable exploitation, and also look for opportunities to be lazy and slack at work. The "airborne" supervisor broke the tranquility of the housekeeping department, and a power struggle quietly began... Finally, when the peak season came, "I", exhausted physically and mentally, left the hotel. In the author's plain, restrained and line-drawing narrative, a guest room is a microcosm of the world. In the past, the joys, sorrows, sorrows and joys of the room attendants who were at the bottom were almost never noticed or expressed, and even they themselves turned a blind eye. This group of waitresses with different faces, dressed in khaki work clothes, seem to have never met other passers-by in this city, but in fact they are no different: it is almost impossible to escape the helplessness of life, and hard work and hard work cannot change the solidified destiny.

This book is based on the author's personal experience of traveling in China from 1919 to 1920. The story takes place in the British colony of Hong Kong and a place called "Meitan Mansion" in inland China. The heroine Katie Finn had an affair with Charlie, the assistant chief secretary of Hong Kong. Her husband Walter (a bacteriologist in the Hong Kong government) found out and forced her to go to Meitan Mansion where cholera was rampant. Unfortunately, Walter eventually contracted the disease and died. Katie returned to Hong Kong and fell into the arms of Charlie. She was so ashamed that she finally returned to the UK to reconcile with her father and went to live with her father in the Bahamas. From the book, readers can see the ambiguity and contradiction behind a seemingly indifferent narrator: as a part of the imperial narrative, the author's orientalist political and cultural views are hidden under the veil; as an individual writer who pays attention to human nature, his doubts and longing for love, ridicule and tolerance of human nature are hidden under his veil.

Modern novel. Jin Yizhu. Chongqing Cultural Life Publishing House first edition in September 1942. The whole book is divided into 4 parts. This is a novel of more than 800,000 words. The work is based on a series of major historical events after Japanese imperialism invaded China. It reflects the turbulent social life at that time through the different experiences of more than 20 members of a declining family. The author said in the "Preface": "What I am trying to describe in this long novel is not just trivial family affairs, personal relationships between men and women, and some sadness in a family in a declining big city. I hope that my pen is a magnifying glass, first directly showing those rotten parts, or indirectly highlighting them." The work focuses on the story of the young woman Huang Jingling who finally left her old family and vigorously devoted herself to the anti-Japanese and national salvation movement, and her rapid growth experience. Her father, Huang Lingzhi, was conservative in his thinking, but he maintained national integrity at a critical moment for the survival of the nation. They represent positive forces in real life. The work also depicts many people who have fallen behind the times. The more significant ones are Jingchun, an individualist who is heavily influenced by idealist philosophy, and Jingzhu, a hedonist who plays with the world. Although the work lacks a carefully conceived and refined typical plot, the character description is not profound, and it is relatively loose in expressing the changes and dynamics of various social classes on the eve of the Anti-Japanese War, the work expresses the contradictions and mentality of some old Chinese intellectuals as they embark on a new path.
