About This Novel
"The Eve" is a novel, set in Peking, and describes the characters and fates of different members of a run-down official family before the "July 7th Incident". The novel mainly describes two forces on the eve of the Anti-Japanese War. One is the positive force, represented by the rapidly growing young woman Huang Jinling and her father Huang Jianzhi who maintains national integrity; the other is the negative force, represented by the individualistic Jingchun and the hedonistic Jingzhu. Taking the Huang family as a microcosm of the society at that time, it shows the overall appearance of society on the eve of the Anti-Japanese War by depicting the different choices made by different members of the extended family at the time of national life and death, as well as their disparate destinies.
