Shen He is a ten-thousand-year-old ginseng spirit from the mountains. Unlike other ginseng spirits, he is plump and pale, with several clusters of green leaves growing from his head, making him especially conspicuous. Relying on his ability to take human form, he often throws his weight around in the mountains and bullies his own kind. The other ginseng spirits suffer miserably under him, but at last the day arrives when this rotten ginseng is finally brought to heel. The Ghost King, Qi Jiangyuan, is violent by nature and gravely ill, with little time left to live. He desperately needs a ten-thousand-year-old ginseng root as medicine to save his life. Tricked by the other ginseng spirits, Shen He happily delivers himself right to the Ghost King, only for Qi Jiangyuan to grab him by the leaves on his head. He immediately puts on airs. “You can have me, sure, but I have very high standards. The soil must be loose and free of stones, I need just the right amount of water, and I must get sunlight every day... At the slightest dissatisfaction, he throws a tantrum and threatens to hang himself, warning that he won’t treat the Ghost King if he doesn’t get his way. Later, when Qi Jiangyuan’s old illness flares up, Shen He grumbles and curses, but still softens and climbs into his bed. Qi Jiangyuan looks at him and chuckles. “Baby, you’re actually just a white radish.
