A Cup of Cat Paw Coffee

Her friend had gone through yet another breakup, and Ye Qiu, as always, silently offered her a tissue.

Her friend was a blubbering mess. Ye Qiu remained cool and detached.

"Ye Qiu, what do I have to do to be as clearheaded and rational as you?" her friend asked through her tears.

"..." Ye Qiu fell silent.

She remembered that year, that day, when a light rain was falling.

Still young and naive, she was chatting and laughing with others at a barbecue restaurant when her phone screen lit up at the wrong moment.

Text message:

"Are you coming back tonight?"

Irritated, she turned on Do Not Disturb and tossed her phone into her bag.

Beyond the rolling shutter that shut out the clamor and the quiet of the night, someone watched in silence. Cigarette butts piled up beside his worn canvas shoes.

He turned off his screen and, of his own accord, walked out of her world.
