At a lecture, American anthropologist Margaret Mead was once asked by a student, "How can you tell whether a primitive tribe has entered the early stages of civilization?"

The students thought the answer might be pottery, a fishhook, or, at the very least, a stone mortar for grinding rice.

But Mead replied, "A thighbone that was broken and then healed."

In primitive societies, once someone was injured, especially in the leg, their chances of survival were very slim. The fact that the bone had healed showed that the injured person had not been abandoned by their companions.

The ability to show compassion is the most fundamental difference between civilization and barbarism.
