I'm a beagle.
Well, that's not quite right. Strictly speaking, I'm a little girl who ate the Dog-Dog Fruit, Beagle Form.
I have a dad, an older sister, and lots and lots of uncles and aunts. I should be very happy, since I'm the youngest in the family.
But nobody in my family loves me.
I want Dad to pick me up and spin me around, but he never will. He'll only play with me for a little while before putting me down.
My sister is always fighting with Dad and won't play with me.
My uncles and aunts run away as soon as they see me. They don't want to play with me either.
I'm so sad. After reading the fairy tale about the little tadpole looking for its mother, I decided to run away from home and go find the "Mom" I've never met. If she's my mom, she'll definitely love me and want to play with me.
I don't know what Mom looks like. In my memory, Mom is pink, so I'm going to find someone pink!
The captain of the Beasts Pirates has two daughters, but they're no different from sons. The older one is always saying she wants to be a man, while the younger one tears the house apart every day. The younger daughter's greatest feat was taking on the entire Beasts Pirates by herself. Even he, supposedly the toughest one around, was so exhausted after playing with her that he collapsed on the spot. Especially when she got carried away and kept going "werwerwer" right in his ear, he felt like the most hard-done-by dad in the world.
Then one day, his youngest daughter suddenly went missing. After everyone on the ship had spent days frantically searching for her, they found her
"Mommy, Mommy, you have to be my mom!"
A certain flamboyant pirate, male and just starting to make a name for himself, felt a vein bulge on his forehead. Looking at the little tyke with a pair of long, drooping dog ears on her head and shining eyes fixed on him, he laughed in exasperation. "Kid, I'm not your mom."
The beagle pointed at his pink coat and insisted, "You are my mom! Mommy, Mommy, Mommy..."
She was looking for her mom everywhere.
And the unlucky Donquixote Family weren't the only ones she ran ragged.
There was also the notorious baby-making, husband-collecting Big Mom Pirates, a famous Marine Admiral, a famous drunkard, and others...
Before long, the sea had a Beagle Victims' Alliance. Everyone who'd been called "Mom" by the beagle felt like they'd gone mad after being trapped in a family for decades.
In the middle of all this, a voice that didn't fit in chimed in: "Whose puppy is this? So cute. I want to adopt her."
The Beagle Victims' Alliance: "!"
"Open up! We're delivering a dog!"
A few things to know before reading:
1. Inspired by a popular internet meme, and I've wanted to write a dog-like heroine for ages.
2. The heroine really is a little menace. It's best not to identify too much with the parents (.). Don't insult my puppy; she's just a little beagle.
3. The heroine is five or six from the start. The early story focuses on family; the romance only becomes prominent once she's an adult. Family and friendship are more important than romance throughout.
4. Her name is Candice (candy). I wanted a bit of an adorable contrast (?).
