I Didn't See Anything

"Have you noticed that the flowerbed downstairs always reeks of corpses...?"

Yan Juexi: "You're overthinking it. That's just the smell of fertilizer."

"One of the pictures on the wall in the twin girls' fourth-floor apartment shows someone turning their head 180 degrees!"

Yan Juexi: "It's photoshopped. Young people love editing pictures."

"The man on the third floor, who was always drinking and beating his wife, hasn't shown up for a week, and now there's a brand-new leather sofa in their apartment..."

Yan Juexi: "They just got divorced. Good riddance to an abuser."

"The most important thing is your friend. He, he killed someone and ate them, there's blood in his kitchen! Didn't you see it?!"

Yan Juexi raised his head. In the glass window behind the speaker, a faint black silhouette had appeared, and the air around them had grown cold.

Yan Juexi said, "No."

He said calmly, "I didn't see anything."

Yan Juexi's best friend died at the scene of a massive pileup and explosion several years ago. Not a trace of his body remained.

Three years later, on a rainy night, Yan Juexi heard someone knocking at his door. He opened it and found his friend, who had died years ago, standing outside.

His once-best friend had skin as pale as death. Heavy raindrops slid slowly down his hair. "...Xiao Xi, I'm back."

From that moment on, Yan Juexi sensed that something around him had changed.

In a world of ghosts and monsters, a real human's survival rule, if they don't want to be dragged into the monsters' revelry, is:

[, I didn't see anything.]
