We Promised to Die Together

[May 5, 2025, 11:52 p.m.]

Shu Youling climbed onto the school rooftop, determined to kill herself.

But someone had already beaten her there, standing on the railing.

He wore the same school uniform as her. His feet were barely half a centimeter from the drop, yet he greeted her: "What a coincidence."

Shu Youling fell silent.

"Dying alone is too lonely. At least two people can keep each other company." He jumped down from the roof and walked up to Shu Youling. On a sudden whim, he said, "I'll go die with you."

It was a midsummer night, the heat still thick in the air, and even the night breeze seemed wrapped in an irresistible warmth.

Shu Youling answered as if under a spell: "Okay."

He smiled and made her a promise: "It's settled. Whoever goes to die alone will have betrayed the other."

[So we promised we'd have to die together.]
