He Came to See My Movie (Xu Yanzhou X Gu Xici)

[A game of wits between a refined psychopath and a wooden beauty]

[Age gap | Foster-care trope | A devoted lover is betrayed and turns into a psychopath]

[Devoted heir apparent vs. unfaithful actress]

Hong Kong actress Gu Xici had been known as a pretty face throughout her career. Her acting was so awful it was painful to watch, and mainland entertainment media repeatedly wrote her off: "The last pure, innocent beauty of Hong Kong entertainment, yet a wooden doll of a woman."

It wasn't until Gu Xici won the Best Actress award for playing an unfaithful woman in an artsy Hong Kong film that she finally shed her pretty-face-only label.

On the day her award-winning film premiered, the notoriously low-profile and mysterious head of the Xu family conglomerate showed up uninvited. Hong Kong media waited outside, speculating that the heir apparent had taken an interest in Miss Gu Xici.

But after watching the film, when reporters asked him what he thought of Gu Xici's acting, the heir apparent replied with a hint of sarcasm: "She was playing herself."

Everyone in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao circles knew that back then, Xu Yanzhou, the Xu family's heir apparent, had willingly given up his place as successor for a girl he had raised himself.

His love ran as deep as the sea, but the girl had only ever schemed against him. Later, when Hong Kong media dug up the story, they learned that the girl who had betrayed Xu Yanzhou was none other than actress Gu Xici.

Now that the heir apparent had returned from overseas and set his sights on Gu Xici, everyone in the industry guessed she would soon be blacklisted and shut out. Gu Xici herself thought so, too.

For the sake of her career, she racked her brains trying to please Xu Yanzhou. Just as she thought their relationship had started to thaw, she pleaded with him humbly over dinner: "Can you let me go?"

A marriage contract was casually pushed in front of her. Xu Yanzhou sat at the head of the table, his voice cool and detached. "Sign it, and I'll let you go."
