After thinking it over, you ask the kindly-looking club chairman in the sort of English you barely scraped through your college English proficiency exams with: “So I must have been bought to replace Alonso, right?” The chairman smiles. “Of course not. You’re here to be Gerrard’s backup.” You ask, “Fine, I’m not replacing Alonso, but how can I be Gerrard’s backup?” The chairman says your transfer fee was 350 million. You say, “What? I’m that expensive?” He says, “No, you paid us 350 million.” You get it now. A midfielder who brings 350 million in funding, and you’re Gerrard’s backup. 1. Second-person narration.
