The rumors spoke of the fearsome, violent Demon Venerable Ji Hanxue, who had once had a beloved in the immortal realm: the revered swordsmanship prodigy of the Cangxuan Sect.

In the grove where her beloved was buried, Ji Hanxue found a little white fox that looked like her.
She hesitated for a long time, then lifted it up and rubbed it all over, as though she were crying. A smile tugged at her lips. “You really look like her.”
The little white fox looked up at her in confusion, trying to wriggle free from her hands.
Little white fox: Wait, is she treating me like a substitute?
A sharp pain shot through its hind leg. In the end, it gave up struggling and lay in her arms.
After Ji Hanxue rescued Jiang Ruomei, Jiang Ruomei found herself being fed day after day. She began to realize she had apparently become Ji Hanxue’s substitute.
She had wanted to fight back at first, but gave up and let Ji Hanxue do as she pleased. A substitute was fine, then…

One night, demonic energy burst out of Ji Hanxue. Holding the little white fox in a daze, she began to cry. “I miss her.”
What she didn’t know was that the little white fox was Jiang Ruomei herself.
The little white fox returned to human form. A fingertip traced Ji Hanxue’s cheek as she asked curiously, “Is she the one you miss?”
“But I am her.”
Ji Hanxue bit her lip. “I’ve always known.”
