Don't You Like Me?

When Qin Song was six and came with her mother to live in her stepfather's house, all she could think was that it was huge and tall, and didn't feel like a home at all.

Qin Song also had a stepsister named Fang Miao.

But Fang Miao was studying abroad, and Qin Song had only ever seen her in photographs.

The first time that face from the pictures appeared before her, it was at her mother's and stepfather's funeral.

Watching from a distance, Qin Song noticed that Fang Miao didn't seem very saddened by her father's death. She could even smile as she responded to the guests who had come to the funeral.

Her sister, just like her, didn't like her own father.

Qin Song was happy to have this one thing in common, so she asked Fang Miao to take her along and let them live together overseas.

But Fang Miao replied, "We're not related by blood, and I have no obligation to look after you. But I'm willing to give you half of the inheritance Fang Chang left behind."

Fang Miao gave her money, but Qin Song worried Fang Miao wouldn't have enough to eat or wear while living abroad, so she left a bigger share for her.

Later, Fang Miao went abroad again.

But Qin Song hadn't been alone all these years. She rented a new place by herself and fell for the older woman next door.

Because of that woman, her romantic history came to include this line: After graduating high school, I fell in love for the first time, and a straight woman pretending to be gay swindled me out of my money and feelings.

"Do you think everyone is as twisted as you, liking people of the same sex?"

Those words haunted Qin Song throughout university. Afraid someone would see through her, she pretended to be the "normal person" her ex-girlfriend had called her.

"I heard you've been on your own all these years. Looks like their deaths affected you quite a bit."

Inside a convenience store, Qin Song had a dry rice ball stuffed in her mouth when she looked up and saw a tall woman standing beside her: her stepsister, Fang Miao.

"Is this all you're eating? The money I left you couldn't possibly be gone already, could it?"

"I got swindled out of it."

"Well, not all of it. I kept five hundred thousand and opened a general store."
