Why did the voice suddenly get so high-pitched?

Her archenemy's expression turns scornful. "I'm watching you fall from your throne as Little Wuxiang Mountain's number-one fighter. I hope you take a nasty fall."

Gao Youyou lets out a sigh of relief.

Then she hears his thoughts: [When someone like him rises to power, I feel like there's still hope for this world. He'd look even better in the sect leader's robes. Even better, right?]

Gao Youyou: "...Stop looking!"

Why is it that same sickly-sweet, high-pitched voice again?

Her archenemy sneers. "Why shouldn't I look? I want to watch you die at my hands!"

Sure enough, it must be an illusion. Gao Youyou tries to convince herself that her archenemy's cold exterior is the truth, and that his inner thoughts are just the occasional bout of madness.

That is, until a longtime friend of hers can't stand it anymore.

Her friend earnestly warns her: I think he might have feelings for you that aren't entirely innocent.

Gao Youyou scoffs. "Absolutely impossible."

The very idea is laughable, so she brings it up with her archenemy. "Someone said you might have feelings for me beyond those of an archenemy. It's a joke, and a huge insult to the bond we've built as rivals over the years."

He freezes, then replies in a low, world-weary voice, "Yes. It is a joke."

[Who figured out that I like him?]

[I was hiding it so well!]

"..."

Gao Youyou turns and bolts, determined to get away!

System: "No need to worry about that. As long as you manage the mall diligently, you can hire staff such as [a golden delivery driver who has survived three disasters], [a handsome security guard who keeps hopping in and out of the Evil God's stomach and coming back to life], [a legendary saleswoman who can trick even ghosts into buying health supplements], [a Republic-era child prodigy chef who can finely dice anything into minced meat], and [a top repairman whom even your cousin praised after his death]."
