Unfortunately, she had no children in the five years after her second marriage. Gradually, her mother-in-law began to treat her coldly, her husband grew increasingly distant, her sister-in-law meddled in everything, and her domineering older sister-in-law lorded it over her. Please don’t nitpick the details.) Coming next: The Marquis’s Household Synopsis: Pei Dongting is the eldest legitimate grandson of the most illustrious family in the land, the Pei clan. Refined and dignified, he placed first in the palace examinations at seventeen and served by the emperor’s side, offering counsel and participating in matters of state. He was a standout among his peers, though there was one thing the world criticized him for: marrying too young. When Pei Dongting was seven, his grandfather was traveling through the mountains and rivers and passed through Tanzhou. He hit it off with a local gentleman, drank with him until dawn, and, in a moment of carelessness, promised away his grandson’s hand in marriage. From then on, Pei Dongting had a country girl for a fiancée. The Pei family roundly condemned the old master, while officials in the capital lamented the match. But the deed was done. The Pei family valued its reputation, so when the young woman turned fifteen, they brought her into the household. So what? Pei Dongting disliked her and thought her uneducated. He wouldn’t even speak to her. After bringing her into the household, he used his studies as an excuse to return to the capital alone. Two years later, Pei Dongting placed first in the palace examinations, and his fame soared. On the day the new top scholar paraded through the streets, noblewomen competed to toss him handkerchiefs and flowers. Pei Dongting had nearly forgotten he had a wife. Until one day, at a banquet in the orchids and osmanthus grove outside the capital, he saw a lively, spirited young woman calmly use a bamboo pole to rescue a girl who had fallen into the water. The woman’s features seemed familiar. He asked his attendant, “Have I met this young lady before?” The attendant nearly coughed his throat raw. “My lord, that’s the young madam you brought into the household two years ago!” [Marriage first, love later; he pursues his wife and faces his comeuppance] Theme: Hard work is the one thing that will never let you down.
