The Day of the Spirit Tour

[1]

On the annual Deity Procession Day, Liang Yixin sits by the window and watches the procession pass her home.

She is terrified of the procession because for years she has had the same nightmare: the deity statue at the head of the procession grins at her, holding a child in its hand.

Eight years ago, just after her family moved to Rongcheng, her younger sister suspected that her nightmares were caused by not visiting the local temple to worship. She went to ask the village elders what she should do.

But she never came back.

Liang Yixin and her mother searched from morning until night.

In the end, they found her sister's shoes by the sea.

This year marks the eighth anniversary of her sister's disappearance. Everyone in the village says she fell into the sea and will never return.

Liang Yixin and her mother refuse to believe it.

They often go to the temple to pray for the Sea Goddess to bring her sister home.

On the way home, they pass the temple courtyard where the tower-bone deity statues are kept.

Yan Baijie, who is in charge of restoring the statues' painted decorations, tells Liang Yixin that every tower bone featured in Rongcheng's Deity Procession has its own significance.

Liang Yixin stares at the tower-bone statue for a long time.

She realizes that it is different from the one she sees over and over in her dreams.

Her sister, missing for eight years, comes home that year.
