Demoness

[1]

Yaoniang was the youngest child in the family.

She had no name.

Since childhood, she had been confined to the small, four-sided courtyard of the Quiet Heart Garden. The mud walls had only a palm-sized window and a narrow, locked door.

No one dared mention her origins.

They only said she was born under an ill star, a source of disaster, a demon. She was forbidden to leave the courtyard, and outsiders were forbidden to speak to her.

Zhou Kuang was another family bastard.

The Madam said that giving birth to him was like being saddled with a debt collector. He was a little demon king through and through.

[2]

One day, the two met.

Yaoniang was embroidering in the courtyard when an arrow fell from the sky and plunged straight into the flower bed.

She screamed in alarm.

Zhou Kuang was startled outside, too. He had no idea anyone lived in this moss-covered, abandoned courtyard. He apologized through the door. He wanted to ask more, but no one answered from inside.

[3]

The news that Zhou Kuang had started studying spread throughout the entire household. The Madam wept with excitement, and even his tutor called it a miracle. The two pushed open the door, only to see a cookbook spread out on the table while he rolled up his sleeves and kneaded dough.

The tutor asked, "Young Master, what does this mean?"

Zhou Kuang said, "Yaoniang likes it."

The Madam broke into a cold sweat and hurried to the back courtyard.

The iron chains as thick as a wrist had been cut. The moss and weeds had been cleared from the walls, and the courtyard was in full bloom with flowering crabapple trees...

[4]

Everyone called her a demon.

But she could cry, laugh, and feel pain.

The night Yaoniang escaped the Quiet Heart Garden, a great fire broke out at the Zhou estate, burning every vile person in the household to ashes.
