I.
Du Lingyue was a well-behaved girl raised in luxury, spending her whole life coddled at home, rarely stepping outside. In the end, she became the perfect wife and mother in everyone's eyes.
Unfortunately, her life was not as perfect as it appeared.
Her husband called her boring. He cheated first, then blamed her for not knowing how to keep a man's heart. Her daughter thought she didn't know how to dress and was too controlling, and was always saying cruel things to her.
The day her daughter brought home a dyed-haired hoodlum with a souped-up motorcycle, Du Lingyue hid in her room.
Outside, her husband was roaring as he grappled with the hoodlum.
Inside, Du Lingyue peered through the crack in the door and saw a mature man single-handedly pulling her husband and the hoodlum apart. Her usually icy face turned scarlet.
II.
Du Lingyue resolutely decided to get a divorce, and both families sent people to talk her out of it.
Everyone thought Du Lingyue wanted a divorce because her husband had cheated. Everyone thought she'd keep putting up with it for the sake of the family.
"Men are all like that. Who hasn't had to put up with it...?"
"Just do it for the kid."
"We're all getting on in years. What's the point?"
Her daughter, replying to a message from the hoodlum, said impatiently, "Can you give it a rest? Just look at yourself, you're old and haggard. Who'd want you if you divorced Dad?"
Du Lingyue, who had been silent until then, suddenly spoke up. "Am I old and haggard?"
Her daughter retorted, "What else? How old are you? Do you still think you're some kind of great beauty?"
Du Lingyue immediately went into her room and changed into a red dress she'd never worn in front of her husband or daughter. She was as beautiful as a sculpture from ancient Greece.
In front of her stunned daughter, husband, and everyone else, Du Lingyue spun around where she stood.
Her steps were light as a flying crane, her smile radiant as the stars and the moon.
"What about now?"
III.
After the divorce, her ex-husband's life took a nosedive, and he started pestering Du Lingyue again. Her daughter even threatened to jump off a building to force Du Lingyue to remarry.
Du Lingyue asked her daughter in turn, "Everyone's against you dating so young. Why do you insist on it?"
Her daughter screamed, "You don't understand! He made my whole life shine! He took ninety-nine steps toward me, so I'll take the last step for him. I want to be with him!"
Du Lingyue looked at her tenderly.
"Of course I understand. I have someone who made my whole life shine, too."
"No matter how many times, no matter where he is, I'll take ninety-nine steps toward him, a hundred steps, a hundred and one..."
"For him, I could even leave your father, and give you up, too."
