I Became a Constable in Ancient Times

Yang Xiao transmigrates into the home of an ordinary family in ancient times, where everyone is on the verge of starving to death. Seeing that none of them will survive another day, he makes a resolute choice: though constables rank even lower than merchants in the hierarchy of scholars, farmers, artisans, merchants, and officials, he needs to stay alive. So he heads to the county office and takes a job in the constabulary, becoming a constable.

The county has no shortage of odd cases:

An old doctor at a clinic treats someone to death. Is it a failure of humanity, or the collapse of morality?

A licentiate abandons his studies to become a bandit. Is his conscience dead, or has his humanity warped?

An embroiderer runs off with a rough-and-tumble man; a young woman tries to hang herself; an old man jumps into the river; a woman beats her husband; a young fellow makes a scene outside the county office, demanding a divorce...

With a handful of sunflower seeds in one hand and money rolling in with the other, Yang Xiao makes a name for himself around the county. But could that soldier from the barracks please stop coming to drink with him? He really can't drink another drop.

Shen Jing, the young general of the Shen Family Army, is injured while fighting the enemy at the border and falls unconscious by the roadside. A constable from a small border county comes to his rescue.

The constable is a handsome fellow, but he just can't keep his nose out of other people's business.

When a couple next door fights, he can stand under their wall and listen for two whole hours. Then he'll turn to Shen Jing and say with a click of his tongue, "I'm telling you, they'll be at it again tomorrow."

Shen Jing wasn't interested at first. But in the middle of the night, he couldn't resist grabbing a handful of seeds for Yang Xiao and leaning over his bedside, curiosity eating away at him. "Tell me more."
